Alpha-lipoic acid increases natural pregnancy rate

Couples where the male partner took 600 MG of alpha-lipoic acid daily for 3 months had about double the natural pregnancy rate

Can an antioxidant improve sperm health?

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a powerful antioxidant naturally produced by the body and also available as a supplement. Antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress, which occurs when harmful molecules called free radicals build up in the body.

Oxidative stress can damage many types of cells—including sperm DNA. When sperm DNA is damaged, it may impact fertilization and has been linked to recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL).

A 2023 clinical trial studied couples experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss and gave the male partners 600 mg of ALA daily for 80 days.

The results showed promising improvements in the men who took ALA:

✨ Reduced sperm DNA damage

✨ Lower oxidative stress

✨ Improved chromatin structure (important for healthy DNA packaging)

✨ Better sperm motility

During the 12-month follow-up, more natural pregnancies occurred in the group taking ALA compared to the placebo group.

While more research is still needed, these findings suggest that supporting antioxidant levels may play an important role in improving sperm health and fertility outcomes
