Acupuncture for Alpha-Gal Syndrome
Could acupuncture help with Alpha-Gal Syndrome?
New research is giving hope to people living with Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS)—a tick bite-induced allergy that can cause reactions to mammalian meat and dairy.
A retrospective study of 137 patients explored the use of Soliman Auricular Allergy Treatment (SAAT), a specialized form of auricular acupuncture.
✨ The results:
• 96% of patients with follow-up reported complete symptom relief.
• Many remained symptom-free for months to years after treatment.
• 27 of 29 patients with a history of anaphylaxis were able to safely tolerate foods that had previously triggered severe reactions.
• The treatment was well tolerated, with no adverse effects or treatment-related anaphylaxis reported.
SAAT involves placing a tiny sterile needle at a precise point on the ear for approximately 3 weeks, allowing continuous stimulation while the body responds.
While these findings are incredibly encouraging, it's important to note that this was a retrospective case series. Larger prospective clinical trials are still needed to confirm how effective the treatment is and better understand how it works.
As research continues to grow, acupuncture may become an exciting option alongside traditional management for individuals living with Alpha-Gal Syndrome.
