How often should you get acupuncture?

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET ACUPUNCTURE?

One of the most common questions we hear is:

“How often do I need to come?”

The answer? It depends on what we're treating.

Acupuncture isn't necessarily a one-size-fits-all treatment schedule. How frequently you come in can depend on whether your concern is acute or chronic, how severe your symptoms are, your overall health, and how you respond to treatment.

Here’s a general idea of what treatment may look like:

⚡ ACUTE CONDITIONS

Did you wake up with a stiff neck?

Recently strain your back?

Have a sudden flare-up of pain?

When something is new or particularly intense, treatments may initially be scheduled closer together.

Why?

The goal during this stage is often to get symptoms under control and establish improvement. As you begin feeling better, treatments can usually be spaced farther apart.

Think: More support in the beginning → less as you improve.

🌿 CHRONIC CONDITIONS

If you've been dealing with something for months—or years—we typically look at it differently.

Chronic pain, recurring headaches, long-standing tension, or other persistent symptoms may involve patterns that have developed over time.

Rather than expecting one treatment to undo something that has been present for years, we may recommend a period of consistent treatment and then reassess.

We're looking for changes like:

• Are your symptoms becoming less intense?

• Are flare-ups happening less often?

• Are improvements lasting longer between treatments?

• Are you sleeping or functioning better?

• Are you relying less on other symptom-management strategies?

Progress isn't always “my pain disappeared overnight.”

Sometimes progress starts with realizing:

“I went four days before it started bothering me again instead of every day.”

That's useful information.

🤍 MAINTENANCE & WELLNESS

Once you're feeling better, you may not need the same frequency of treatment.

Some patients choose to continue acupuncture periodically because they find it helpful for managing recurring tension, stress, sleep, or general wellness.

Others simply return when they feel like their symptoms are starting to creep back in.

Maintenance care should be individualized—not something you're automatically locked into forever.

SO… HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL YOU NEED?

There isn't one number that's right for everyone.

Your treatment plan may depend on:

✓ How long you've had the condition

✓ How severe or frequent your symptoms are

✓ Your age and overall health

✓ Other contributing factors

✓ Your response to treatment

✓ Your treatment goals

And your plan should change as you change.

We don't want to keep treating you at the same frequency simply because that's where you started.

The goal is progress.

Treat more consistently when your body needs more support, reassess along the way, and space treatments out as appropriate.
