Magnesium + Anxiety
It’s wild how often this comes up in my 1:1 client intakes...
When I ask about main symptoms, almost every single person lists anxiety as one of their top struggles.
And guess what? 🤔
9 out of 10 of them are taking high-dose magnesium — and usually nothing else.
Yes, magnesium is incredibly important 💊
It’s needed for 300+ enzymatic reactions, and most people are at least mildly deficient.
👉 Mineral deficiencies don’t happen in isolation. When you pour in magnesium without balancing the rest of the “team,” things can actually get worse.
Let’s break it down 👇
💧 Magnesium + Sodium
Magnesium calms the nervous system.
Sodium helps hold magnesium in your cells.
If sodium is low (from coffee ☕, stress 😣, sweating 💦, or low salt intake 🧂), your body dumps magnesium — leaving you even more depleted and anxious.
🍌 Magnesium + Potassium
These regulate how your cells communicate.
Low potassium (common with low-carb diets or poor gut absorption) makes magnesium less effective — cue that “wired but tired” feeling
.
🦴 Magnesium + Calcium
Magnesium relaxes. Calcium contracts.
If magnesium gets too high relative to calcium, you can feel spacey, dizzy, emotional, or even get heart palpitations — the exact opposite of calm.
So yes — magnesium is critical, but it’s not the solo hero it’s made out to be.
If you’ve been taking magnesium for months and your anxiety, bloating, or sleep still haven’t improved...
it’s time to look deeper at your full mineral balance. 🌿
